Buccaneers GM Jason Licht talks about new kickoff rule and how it affects NFL Draft evaluations
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The NFL kickoff is going to look very different in 2024 and beyond, and that could have an effect on how NFL general managers evaluate talent ahead of the NFL Draft.

At least that appears to be the case for Tampa Bay Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht.

Licht met with the media on Thursday afternoon, and he admitted that a player's history and ability as a return man has a bit more of an added value after the new rule's implementation.

"Yeah, for sure," Licht said. "It's going to become kind of more of an offensive play almost.  With the way that teams are going to scheme it.  None of us know exactly how it's going to look because we haven't done it yet, but we have a thought of what it's going to be like.  We've had a lot of discussions about it.

"So, it's going to put a premium on that type of returner, whether it's going to be a punt returner or a kick returner.  It's going to be kind of an offense play.  So, those special teams, special plays, special players.  We're going to put an emphasis on that."

The new kickoff alignment and rules indeed will create the opportunity for a new offensive play, as Licht mentions.  The ball will be kicked off at the same place, but the 10 coverage players will be lined up on the opponent's 40-yard line.  The blockers on the return team will be lined up at their own 35, and up to two returners are waiting in the landing zone between the goal line and 20-yard line.

Given that touchbacks are now awarded to the 30-yard line for balls kicked into the end zone, there is far greater encouragement to kick the ball into the landing zone and try to make a tackle.

For skill position players who bank on their return ability and speed - which had become something of a lost art with the large number of touchbacks up through last season - this could open up a whole new world of opportunity to make a roster.

At least, that appears to be the case in Tampa Bay.
