Grandal had been sidelined since July 5 after undergoing surgery to repair a torn tendon in his left knee. He has been on assignment at Triple-A Charlotte and Double-A Birmingham for the last couple of weeks.
Grandal is hitting .188/.388/.436 with 14 home runs and 38 RBI in 63 games this season. It's been a down year for the 32-year-old, who earned his second All-Star selection just two years ago.
To make room for Grandal, the White Sox optioned catcher Zack Collins to Charlotte. Seby Zavala is the only other catcher currently on the roster.
The White Sox are sitting comfortably atop the American League Central with a 74-55 record, nine games ahead of the second-place Cleveland Indians.
