Red Sox Fireballer Reportedly Could Be Back With Club In Time For Stretch Run
Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

The Boston Red Sox could have some reinforcements on the way.

Boston certainly has been bitten by the injury bug this season. The Red Sox have surprised many people and currently are 62-56 and are just three games out of an American League Wild Card spot but could be even better. Boston was without the services of star shortstop Trevor Story until recently and also has dealt with a wide range of injuries to its pitchers. Even with all of the injuries, the Red Sox have remained afloat and have realistic a chance to grab a postseason spot.

The Red Sox could have even more depth back shortly as relief pitcher Zack Kelly reportedly is making progress in his rehab, according to MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo.

"Another potential bullpen arm down the stretch for the Red Sox: Zack Kelly continues to progress and could get to the point where he’s facing hitters next week," Cotillo said.

Kelly made his big league debut with the Red Sox last season and was poised to have a bigger role this campaign. The fireballer was in the 63rd percentile in fastball velocity before suffering an elbow injury earlier this season. Kelly made six appearances to begin the 2023 season and compiled a 3.68 ERA while allowing just three earned runs across 7 1/3 innings pitched.

Boston's bullpen has been greatly improved this season as opposed to last year but adding more depth could never hurt. If Kelly could return in the not-so-distant future, it only could help a Boston club looking to get back to the postseason.
